Diabetes is now recognized as a cardiovascular disease equivalent; that is, an individual with diabetes has the same risk of developing a heart attack as someone without diabetes who has already had a heart attack.

Two out of three people with diabetes die of cardiovascular disease. A person with diabetes with cardiovascular disease have a much higher risk of death than a non-diabetic with cardiovascular disease.
