Genetic Risk of Transmitting Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes:
The risk of developing Type 1 Diabetes in the general population is about 0.6%. In the case of an identical twin with Type 1 Diabetes, the unaffected twin has a 50% chance of developing Type 1 diabetes. If one sibling has Type 1 Diabetes, the risk of the other sibling developing Type 1 diabetes is roughly 10%. A woman with Type 1 diabetes has a 2% chance of transmitting Type 1 diabetes to her offspring. A man with Type 1 diabetes has about a 6% chance of transmitting diabetes to his offspring.
Type 2 Diabetes:
The risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes in the general population is about 5%. In identical twins, the unaffected twin has almost 100% risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Siblings of a person with type 2 diabetes have approximately 30% risk of developing diabetes. The offspring of a woman with Type 2 diabetes has a three-fold increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes than do offspring of men with the disease.
